Gloucestershire Winter Cycling: Our Top 6 Tips

Gloucestershire Winter Cycling: Our Top 6 Tips

Winter Cycling Tips so you can win this off-season.

Winter in Gloucestershire brings stunning frosty landscapes and crisp air, but it also means mud, icy roads, and even more mud. Don’t let the cold put you off though because with a few tweaks to your bike and riding routine, winter cycling can be just as rewarding.

1. Prepare Your Bike for Winter

Road salt, mud, and grime can wreak havoc on your bike. Before the season sets in:

  • Lubricate moving parts to prevent rust.
  • Check your chain, brakes, and tyres for wear.
  • Fit mudguards to protect your bike and keep you drier.

Possibly even take the extra step and give your bike a good service before winter so you don't get yourself stuck in a sticky situation half way round a long cold ride. You can explore our workshop and servicing here at The Ark Cycles.

2. Winter Tyres and Adjustments

For Gloucestershire’s icy country lanes, consider bigger winter tyres with deeper treads or bigger studs for extra grip. Alternatively, reduce tyre pressure slightly to improve traction, but obviously don’t go below the minimum rating. (Pop us a call for free advice on what winter tyres will suit you and your bike the absolute best.)

3. Stay Visible

Shorter days and gloomy weather mean good lights and reflective gear are a must. Invest in bright front and rear lights, even if you're not riding at night. Long dreary damp winter days are often fairly dark and it's vital for you to be able to see clearly and be seen when you're out riding.

4. Without sounding like your mother, do go steady on ice and snow

  • Lower your speed and brake gradually.
  • Avoid braking or pedalling on icy corners.
  • Keep extra distance from vehicles and other road users.
  • Snow can be great fun to ride on (off-road) so think about your loop carefully before heading out.

5. Dress for the Cold

Layer up! A breathable base layer, insulating mid-layer, and waterproof outer shell will keep you warm and dry. Don’t forget gloves, overshoes, and a thermal hat under your helmet. Here at The Ark Cycles, we stock a wide range of top-spec riding clothes. So get in touch today to speak with one of our product experts!

6. Maintain Your Bike Regularly

Rinse your bike after muddy rides and dry it thoroughly. Yes, we know it sucks when you are really cold and just want to run into your shower. But cleaning your bike will help save you money in the long run. Pay special attention to cleaning the chain and gears, on your beloved bike. Applying fresh lube weekly helps too. Store your bike in a dry, frost-free spot when not in use! Treat it with care and love and it'll love you back...

Finally, get out and push yourself to ride throughout this winter.
